What is Rosin Oil and How is It Made?

We’d like to introduce you to the wonderful world of Rosin Oil, a form of Cannabis extract. This oil is growing massively in popularity, and for good reason. Rosin is a solid form of resin that is obtained by adding pressure & heat to vapourise volatile liquid terpenes – somebody figured out the using this method on your bud is a good thing!
The Rosin oil is made by heating cannabis – either buds or hash – under low heat (100-150 degrees celsius – the lower the heat, the tastier the extract). Expect to get approx 10-15% of the weight you put in in Rosin oil (more if using kief or hash).
How to Consume Rosin Oil?
A consumption process that has gained massive popularity recently is ‘dabbing’, a form of cannabis consumption that has yet to hit the masses of stoners here in the UK, many of which may not be aware of it. Dabbing is when Cannabis extract – rosin or oil – is heated using a blowtorch similar to a bong hit.
It is it not ideal for smoking in a spliff as the rolling process becomes quite difficult. due to the sticky, thick consistency. However, get past this and the taste is delicious, and the effect rather powerful!
Our history with Rosin Oil
We were introduced to cannabis extract back in 2009 when we first sampled ‘hash oil’ from our then dealer. This extremely sticky oily substance came on tin foil and cost £40 for a gram. We had no idea what to do with it, so just added it to our spliffs and got really, really high.
The next time we sampled cannabis extract was in Amsterdam in Greenhouse Coffeeshop, where we picked up a 60 euro gram of lemon ice isolator hash.
The rosin oil we made for ourselves is similar to the latter!
So you want to make your own Rosin Oil?
What you’ll need:
- Hot Press
- Dabbing Tool
- Parchment / Baking Paper
- Storage
- Bud or hash
The best way to do this is to use a t-rex extractor which is a specialised product for making extract, but people also use hair straighteners to heat and apply pressure to their cannabis to make the rosin oil. The problem with straighteners is the lack of temperature control, but it still does the job.
- Place your bud or flower in 0.2 – 0.5 gram portions and wrap these little packets up in baking/parchment paper.
- Press together with a hot press with lots of pressure for 3-5 seconds.
- This forces the bud to secrete Rosin Oil, which cant then be collected using a dabbing tool.
For storage you’ll need an acrylic pot as the substance is very sticky.
For further info, if you’ve got 15 seconds, this short Instagram video shows the process very well using hair straighteners: https://www.instagram.com/p/zTDFR9E1xQ/
